Affect and Effect

Affect is a verb. Affect is used when one thing is influencing something else or when attempting to mislead. (Affect = to influence)

Effect can be used as either a noun or a verb. Effect refers to the result of something or it can mean to bring about something. (Effect = to bring about)

Thus and Therefore

Thus = like this/that or in this/that manner
Therefore = because of the aforementioned, this follows

e.g. and i.e.

These terms are always followed by a comma.

i.e. = that is
e.g. / for example

Accept and Except

Except = excludes something
Accept = opposite of except

Bear and Bare

Bear = Carry
Bare = Remove something

Precede and Proceed

Precede = go before
Proceed = to go on

Warranty and Warrantee

Warranty = a written guarantee
Warrantee = person to whom a warrant is made

There, Their, and They’re

There = at or in that location
Their = possessive form of they
They’re = contraction of “they are”

They’re doing a great job on their flowerbed over there.

Your and You’re

Your = possessive form of a personal pronoun
You’re = contraction of “you are”

You’re doing a great job on your flowerbed.

Fewer and Less

Fewer = used for counting
Less = used for measuring
